Traditional run coaching is antiquated. Pre-designed training plans have little value as they don’t have the flexibility to adapt to changes in the athletes schedule, life and physiological status. Algorithm based training plans have the ability to monitor athletes physiological status, recent training activity and recovery 24/7 and design the optimal workout based on these factors for an athlete on a daily basis.
Therefore designing and managing a training plan is not the best use of a coach’s time nor will it result in the most effective program for an athlete. Training plan design and maintenance can and should be automated with software such as Garmin’s Daily Suggested Workouts or other AI based training programs.
I personally would have benefited tremendously from this kind of guidance when I was a full time athlete. Back then (well before this kind of technology existed) my training approach was basically: “work harder, not smarter”. I constantly pushed myself to do more and more with little awareness of the need for variety, rest and recovery. Though this allowed me to compete in the same groups as the top level athletes, I was always stuck in a perpetual fitness plateau that prevented me from becoming the top athlete.
My goal is to help athletes improve their running ability by helping them understand and utilize all the data that modern fitness trackers provide.
My program consists of three phases:
- Becoming acquainted with the Garmin Forerunner, building and understanding of the data it provides and establishing baselines of fitness, rest and perceived effort.
- Beginning to follow Garmin’s Daily Suggested Workouts and developing the skill to execute the prescribed workouts.
- Setting and working towards a specific goal using the DSW plan.
The goal of my program will be to help you develop the skills and knowledge to enjoy running as a lifelong passion and be able to improve and pursue new goals in the sport on an ongoing basis using the available technology.
